Polyimide (PI) is a polymer containing two nitrogen-bonded acyl groups of imide monomers. It can be thermoset or thermoplastic. In some applications, it replaces materials such as glass, metal or even steel. It is known for its very high thermal stability (> 500°C), it also has excellent dielectric properties and an inherently low coefficient of thermal expansion.

As an attractive dielectric material, polyimide has been widely used in electronics, aerospace and automotive applications, meeting the growing demand for materials that perform well under harsh conditions such as high temperatures. Polyimides are an important class of stepwise polymers due to their high-temperature stability, mechanical properties and excellent chemical resistance.

Polyimides – what makes them popular?

Polyimide (PI) is a high-performance polymer of imide monomers containing two acyl groups (C=O) bonded to nitrogen (N). These polymers are known for their high-temperature performance in the 400-500°C range as well as their chemical resistance.

In many industrial applications, they are used to replace the traditional uses of glass, metal and even steel.

Polyimide's excellent mechanical properties make it useful in applications that require robust organic materials, such as:

High temperature resistant fuel cells
Flat panel displays
Aerospace applications
Chemical and environmental protection industries
As well as various military applications
They are used as plastics, films, laminating resins, insulating coatings and high-temperature structural adhesives.
